Community placements for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Programmes - Can I claim travel expenses?

For all Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Programmes

For a community or health visiting placements (where you might travel to multiple locations during a shift), you will be automatically paid for any eligible mileage from your home to your placement hub. If you conduct any additional mileage beyond this, you must submit a travel expense form, this can be found in Blackboard entitled Form 2 – Community Travel Expenses. The current rate for mileage claims is 31p per mile.

You will receive travel expenses if the distance from your home to your placement hub is more than the distance from your home to the University, in this circumstance you can claim the excess mileage (e.g., your journey from home to university is 20 miles and your return journey from home to your placement is 30 miles, you can submit a claim for 10 miles).

Any additional mileage is subject to deductions, please follow the guidance outlined on the form.

Please note:

Travel conducted on a community placement prior to 17th August 2022 is not automatically paid, to claim for any eligible mileage during this period please complete Form 1 – Community Travel Expenses.

To claim students must use their own car to drive to the placement and for any additional journeys.  Students are also required to arrange business insurance cover through their motor insurance company.
