POW Timesheets – I haven’t achieved my placement hours; can I make up time?

For all Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Programmes

Yes, it is possible to make up placement time, how you do this will depend on when you would like to make up the time.  All placement time must be made up, to ensure you meet the NMC’s & course’s mandatory requirement for registration.

During your current placement’s start and end date:

If you have missed time on your current placement, you should aim to make this time up before the end of the placement. You may arrange these made-up shifts with your Practice Supervisor/Assessor.

Once you have completed made-up time within your current placement, you can add this on to your timesheet using POW. Whilst your timesheet is “In Progress” you can edit it. Below the timesheet grid there is a blue hyperlink stating “Click here to expand the block for Adding MADE UP TIME” – selecting this will allow you to add made up time.

During your annual leave period:

We understand it is not always possible to make up time during an allocated placement’s start and end date and that using a period of annual leave to make up time may be more convenient. The process to follow will depend on whether you are requesting to

- extend a current placement into an annual leave period or

- arrange a new placement within an annual leave period

Please note:

This may not always be possible as it will depend on placement capacity, all discussions and arrangements for placements that fall within annual leave must be undertaken by the USW placement team, who will confirm with you using Advice Zone Online.

 - Extending a current placement into an annual leave period

If you have an Annual Leave period directly following your placement, you may be able to arrange to extend the placement, by completing an Extend / Additional Placement Request Form (available to download from the Blackboard Health Practice Placements course organisation) and submit using ‘Ask Us A Question’ within Advice Zone Online.

 - Requesting a new placement within an annual leave period

If you have a period of Annual Leave you would like to use this time to make up clinical hours, you will need to:

1. Discuss the need for an additional placement with your personal tutor and obtain their written agreement by email.

2. Submit a completed Extend / Additional Placement Request Form (available to download from the Blackboard Health Practice Placements course organisation) and submit using ‘Ask Us A Question’ attaching the personal tutor email agreement.

For students studying Occupational Therapy

If you haven’t achieved your required practice hours, you will need to discuss with your Personal Tutor and your Practice Educator, to arrange an opportunity to make time up. Time can only be made up during annual leave periods. An extension of a placement can only be used to achieve missing hours and not to achieve competencies.

For Students studying Operating Department Practice

You are permitted to carry 2 weeks of outstanding placements hours into the next academic year, however, by the end of your final year you must have completed the mandatory (course) hours required by the HCPC for registration.

You must liaise with the Lead Practice Educator and your personal tutor to arrange any made-up hours/shifts.

For students studying Physiotherapy

If you haven’t achieved your required practice hours, you will need to discuss with your Personal Tutor to arrange an opportunity to make time up.
