FAQ 491
When should I visit an Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) or Minor Injury Department?

You should visit the A&E department only if your problem is an emergency. An A&E department deals with genuine life-threatening emergencies. More guidance on when you should go to A&E can be found on the NHS website.

If you have an injury that is not serious you can go to a Minor Injury Unit for help, instead of going to an Accident & Emergency department. By doing this Accident & Emergency departments can concentrate on those with serious and life-threatening conditions.

You can search for your nearest Minor Injury Unit; select hospital from the drop-down, enter full postcode, town/city and click on search.  On the Search Results page use the ‘Filter by’ option and select Minor Injury Unit.
