FAQ 248
What should I include in a Cover Letter?

We recommend that you initially refer to the USW Careers page on Cover Letters where you will also find cover letter examples.

Normally a Cover Letter will follow a four-paragraph structure:

1. Address your Cover Letter to a named person and then introduce your current situation and reason for applying / writing.

2. Explain why you are interested in working for that particular organisation.

3. Introduce your CV and summarise your key skills and experience relevant to the position you are applying.

4. End your Cover Letter in a positive and polite way.  Mention you look forward to hearing from the employer and would be available to provide any further information.

Your Cover Letter should not detail everything that is in your CV but rather be an introduction to it.

You can also get your CVs/Application forms and covering letters checked by USW Careers; ask a question or book an appointment with a Careers Adviser.
